Just a Few ‘Giving Back’ Highlights from 2009
It was a jam-packed year for Hallmark Healthcare in 2009
and that included our fundraising activities for some amazing
causes.
Highlights
from the year include Hallmark Healthcare becoming a founding
member of the Care
Professionals Benevolent Fund (CPBF) alongside other
reputable, leading care sector organisations and donating £10,000
in the process. Another £250 was donated to CPBF in support
of the festive e-cards they created, which were then used and
sent out by Hallmark staff across the group.
As well as efforts within our care homes, Head Office rose to
the challenge of frequently raising funds for various worthy causes,
this didn’t stop at Christmas as £37 was raised during
Christmas lunch and donated to the Alzheimer’s Society.
As ever staff were good sports about donning their pyjamas and
bringing in teddies from home to raise money for Children in Need
earlier in the year and they even got a mention on BBC
Essex’s website in the process.
Just some of the thank you letters received include one from the
Cardiff Institute for the Blind thanking Hallmark for “generous
support” in sponsoring the production of their fundraising
CD ‘What Colour is the Wind’ and another from the
National Association for Providers of Activities for Older People
(NAPA) to say Hallmark’s “support of NAPA has been
unstinting and makes a real difference to the work [they] do...Whenever
we have dealings with Hallmark your staff are welcoming and kind
– symbolic I think of the values you all hold dear –
and are a pleasure to work with”.

HALLMARK HEALTHCARE SUPPORTS NEW SINGLE RELEASED FOR UK
BLIND CHARITIES
Hallmark Healthcare has helped to fund a charity single,
released to support blind and visually impaired people throughout
the UK.
'What Colour is the Wind' - on sale from December 7th -
is the debut single of Welsh singer entertainer Mike Doyle, and
is a cover of the song written and originally recorded by
British folk and country singer Charlie Landsborough, who took
it to number one in Ireland in 1994.

Hallmark has funded the production costs of the record in conjunction
with the Cardiff-based Gios Group of restaurants, and will be
helping to promote the record throughout its network of residencies.
Avnish Goyal, Managing Director of Hallmark Healthcare said: "This
has been a hugely exciting and moving project for us, it ranks
as one of the most heartwarming songs I have ever heard, superbly
delivered by Mike Doyle who has an incredibly emotive voice.
Visual impairment is a major condition amongst older people and
so supporting blind charities in delivering their vital services
is also something close to our hearts as a group. We hope
sales of What Colour is the Wind go well and it becomes a huge
hit for all concerned."
'What Colour is the Wind' is an emotional Celtic tinged ballad
about a young blind girl asking her father about the appearance
of the visual world. To support the charities led by Cardiff Institute
for the Blind, Charlie Landsborough has signed over his normal
rights to the single for Mike Doyle's charity recording.
Speaking on the release of his new record Mike Doyle said: "I
have been singing What Colour in my shows all around the World
for the past four years and it tugs on the heartstrings of audiences
like no other song I have ever known. It is moving and life re-affirming
and inspires great affection from so many people, and not just
those whose families have been touched by sight-loss."
Rugby legend Gareth Edwards, President of Cardiff Institute for
the Blind said: "I have known Mike for many years and his
warmth and spirit as well as immense talent as a superb singer
and entertainer has endeared him to his fans all over the World.
This shines through in this song and I hope that What Colour Is
the Wind will bring him to the attention of an even wider record-buying
public. I would encourage people to dip into their pockets
and buy this great record and help us as we raise much needed
funds enabling us to deliver support services to visually impaired
people in our country."
Mike Doyle has performed in three Royal variety performances and
a private audience for the Queen and Royal Family. As well
as starring his own show throughout the World, he has starred
in the West End and in touring productions of shows including
Grease and most recently the play Bouncers.
All production costs for the record have been met by a business
partnership of Cardiff restaurateur and entrepreneur Giovanni
Malacrino of Gios restaurants and Avnish Goyal of Hallmark Healthcare.
What Colour is the Wind is available from iTunes, Amazon
and from www.cardiffinstitutefortheblind.co.uk.
Price £3.50 plus p&p.

Helping the British Heart Foundation (BHF) keep vulnerable
hearts beating
The British Heart Foundation’s Cardiff
Heart Nurse Appeal was given a Bollywood boost recently when local
fundraisers raised over £2,500 to help
in the battle against heart disease.
The Indian-themed evening, which was
organised by BHF Heart Nurse Hayley Rose at the India Centre,

help the BHF win the battle against heart and circulatory disease
– the nation’s biggest killer.
Hayley Rose, BHF Nurse at University Hospital Wales, said: “The
Bollywood Evening was a great night, and I am delighted that we
could raise so much money for the Cardiff Heart Nurse Appeal.
As a BHF Nurse, I recognise the good work of the BHF in supporting
over 400 nurses UK-wide. I am so pleased that the money
we have raised will go towards supporting the Appeal.”
The money raised from the Bollywood Evening will go towards BHF
Cymru’s Cardiff Heart Nurse Appeal. The aim of this
Appeal is to raise £125,000 to support, train and equip
a BHF Heart Nurse to benefit local people over three years.
Instances of heart failure are high in Cardiff and this nurse
will be a vital addition in caring for patients in the city.
Volunteer and Fundraising Manager for the BHF, Glenda Meakin,
said: “We’d like to congratulate and thank Hayley
for hosting such a fantastic event. The superb Indian cuisine

HAIR-RAISING SUMMER FUN
A member of staff at Cartref
Annwyl-Fan care home in Betws helped to raise £500 for
the care home recently after offering to shave off all his hair.
Mark
Thomas, a Care Assistant at Cartref Annwyl-Fan agreed to help
raise money for the residents’ fund by having his lovely
black locks reduced to a ‘grade one’. The sponsored
shave was part of the home’s Summer Fete.
Along with Mark’s head shaving antics, Home Manager, Adele
Williams also organised a number of stalls including a tasty home-made
cakes stall, a stall selling sweets, a tombola, music and a ‘Guess
the Name’ of the soft toy competition. Donations collected
on the day went towards the residents’ fund.
Home Manager, Adele Williams said, “I am delighted by how
much money we managed to raise during our Summer Fete, especially
seeing as it was a particularly wet and rainy day. I am really
grateful to everyone who came along on the day to help us raise
the £400 and to Mark who shaved his lovely
hair off to raise an additional £100 for
the residents’ fund.
“I really want to use the money to invest in something that
will make a real difference such as a Nintendo Wii to help the
residents stay fit, healthy and young at heart. The Wii is a great
way of stimulating both body and mind and will encourage residents
to interact not only with each other but also with members of
staff, family and friends when they come to visit”.
