RIGHT ROYAL TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE FOR D-DAY
Amberley Hall care home in Norfolk turned back the clock
with a series of celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of
the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and the 65th anniversary
of D-Day.
Freshly baked jam tarts served on silver stands for high tea,
bunting around the home and a display of hand-made crowns featured
in the celebrations on Tuesday, 2nd June in celebration of the
50th anniversary of the Queen’s coronation.
On Friday, 5th June the home stepped back to the 1940’s
to mark the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings. A number of
residents at the home are war veterans and they donned their old
army uniforms, complete with medals, for the day and talked about
their experiences of living through World War II.
Sue Simpler, the Activities Co-ordinator at Amberley Hall said:
“We have a number of residents who lived through the war
and have vivid memories of their experiences so I wanted to mark
the occasion appropriately.”
The day was especially enjoyable for war veterans: Crawford
Simpson (aged 78), Reginald Pope (aged 83), Rosemary Rooney (aged
94), James Cavanagh (aged 87), Gordon Howell (aged 84) and Agnes
Poulter (aged 96), whose relatives also took part in the Amberley
Hall celebrations.
Amberley Hall’s care team also got into the D-Day spirit
by donning 1940’s attire and playing old wartime songs to
complement the day.
