THE STORY THAT TOLD A THOUSANDS WORDS
A 97-year-old resident at Hallmark Healthcare’s
Cartref
Annwyl Fan care home is proudly celebrating the 50th anniversary
of the Welsh dictionary this year following its production in
1958.
Mr Meurig Harold Evans from Pontlliw in South Wales was awarded
joint first place in an Eisteddfod translation writing competition
50 years ago, which resulted in the initiation of the production
of the first version of the Welsh dictionary.

The first ever dictionary was printed in 1953 but the complete
version of the Welsh dictionary was finished by Mr Evans in 1958
and was printed the same year.
Mr Evans was even awarded an OBE from the Queen in 1995 as a thank
you for his dedication and commitment to producing such a valuable
document for the Welsh language.
Harold has now been at Cartref Annwyl Fan for the past four years
and still enjoys writing. He even entered the Eisteddfod writing
competition last year and although he didn’t win his entry
was highly commended.
Cartref Annwyl Fan is a 70 bed care home for the elderly specialising
in residential, nursing and dementia care. The home has a warm
and friendly environment created by the welcoming staff members,
cosy lounges and beautifully decorated corridors and bedrooms.
Home Manager, Adele Williams was awarded Home Manager of the
Year at the National Care Awards in 2007.
